The Museum of the Lace and the Patrimony of Chantilly (Oise)
Return towards the past... Information stemming from " Nouveau Dictionaire Universel " ( the beginning of 1900 ):
Chantilly: Village of the department
of the Oise, in 40 km of Our Lady of Paris, on the edges of Nonette, the tributary of the
Oise; 2416 inhabitants. One counts there several factories, the main clauses of which are
those of the china, following the example of the factory of Sèvres, the cotton factory,
the mill to flatten the copper, etc.... Manufacture of Fair-haired lager and black Laces.
Vast lawn being of use to horse-races.
Castle of Chantilly: This castle was possessed, from
the XI-th century, by a Rotholis de Senlis, a Lord of Chantilly and Ermenonville. It
passed, after different adventures, at the deMontmorency house. Louis XIII, having made
behead in Monmorency's Toulouse Henri, in 1632 , seized Chantilly and did present of this
earth to Henri de Bourbon, prince of Cop, who besides, was heir of the Montmorency by his
marriage with Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency.....
.... Today, the ancient palace is completely destroyed; the
small castle, that of Enghien and the stables, are the only existing constructions....
Anectote: It is in Chantilly where killed Vatel, by
exaggeration of the idea of his culinary importance, to escape to see an incomplete dinner
as a result of the delay in the arrival of the fish.
The museum was creates on April 12, 1985 by Miss Marguerite Dembreville
(founder of the Cultural centre) and by Miss Odette Lazard. The department Lace is for the
initiative of Mrs Suzanne Raszewski, lacemaker. In this museum, you will discover laces,
mainly of Chantilly, in three rooms (a permanent employed and both others according to the
current events of the museum). You can follow lace classes (Duchess, Chantilly...) to the
Cultural centre, with Mrs Yvonne Roussy (Better Worker of France 2001). You will find
complete coordinates in the column "Formation".
Thanks to Mrs Denise Bosc for this information.
